The mission of Le Monastère des Augustines
Through its cultural and social mission, Le Monastère des Augustines bears witness to the way of life as well as to the social and spiritual mission of the Augustinian Sisters in this country. Inspired by the fervor and compassion that animated the Sisters, Le Monastère’s mission extends the function of welcome, hospitality, memory and renewal of these founding places.
Cultural mission
Le Monastère des Augustines preserves and enhances the heritage and memory of the Augustinians of Québec for the benefit of the public and future generations. This community of hospitaller women, who arrived in New France in 1639, has been the guardian of exceptional treasures over the years. The Augustinian Sisters have meticulously preserved numerous artifacts, archives and ancient books for centuries. These objects and documents, from the twelve Augustinian monasteries in Québec, are now preserved in our museum reserve and archive centre. Their history traces the evolution of healthcare, agriculture, trade and community life in Québec from the earliest days of the colony.
Today, Le Monastère makes this heritage accessible through a museum experience that blends in with the historical site’s decor. People can stay and take part in activities at the site of the first hospital North of Mexico in North America. It’s a unique opportunity to rest and rejuvenate through contact with history and immerse yourself in a legacy that spans nearly 400 years.

Social mission
Caring for the sick is the very reason why the first Augustinian Sisters arrived in New France on August 1, 1639. With compassion for human suffering, total respect for individuals as they are, and the ambition to offer care aligned with science, these pioneers courageously spread their values throughout society. In keeping with the work of the Augustinians, Le Monastère supports those who care for those around them and the general population
Our social mission takes the form of solidarity-based services for family caregivers as well as for caregivers from the health and social services network and the community. These services include: individual or group respite stays, vocation reconnection days, sharing communities, individual support, workshops, support groups and more. We also offer a solidarity rate for those accompanying a sick person who live outside Québec and requires care in Québec City. Our approach to respite, which is “taking care of oneself to better take care of others,” enables people to benefit from a restful experience that promotes personal and collective well-being.
