Find of the Month – Indigenous Boxes
Every month, an object from the heritage bequest by the Augustinian community is selected by the museum storage facility and archives center teams. Featured this month: Indigenous boxes.
Several examples of Aboriginal art are present in the Monastère des Augustines’ museum collections, such as carved or painted wooden boxes in various shapes. According to oral tradition, indigenous peoples staying in Quebec City’s various monasteries made them, whether they were residents or hospital patients. While the first has retained its original cachet, the second bears witness to the nuns’ habit of giving a second wind to their storage boxes by reusing them to store various everyday objects.
