Did you know that in the past, religious communities were mainly responsible for people’s health care? The Augustinian Sisters founded the very first hospital in North America, north of Mexico: the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec. Remedies to help cure the sick were created by the forebearers of today’s pharmacists: apothecaries. Apothecaries used natural ingredients in their remedies.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Augustinian apothecaries played a central—and even pivotal—role at the hospital. In addition to overseeing the provisioning of medicinal ingredients, they were also responsible for developing the remedies. These remedies were mainly plant-based; however, they could also be made with animal-based ingredients or minerals-based. The different processes and ingredients used varied from one medication to another—and from one era to another.
Like the apothecary sister, Le Monastère des Augustines offers you this natural recipe. It’s easy to make and perfect for the care of skin and lips.
