Until the beginning of the 20th century, the Augustinians, <a href=\"https:\/\/info.monastere.ca\/en\/free-healthcare-at-hotel-dieu-de-quebec\/\">responsible for taking care of people who were ill<\/a>, trained among themselves through mimicry-based learning\u2014by copying what their elders showed them. The medical revolution near the end of the 19th century caused hospital requirements to increase, so the Augustinians had to go to school!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"item wysiwyg component-image\" ><div class=\"container\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/monastere.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/old\/2020\/03\/55._Une_leon_danatomie__lcole_des_infirmires._Vers_1960-1-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"The H\u00f4tel-Dieu de Qu\u00e9bec School of nursing\" class=\"wp-image-5532\"\/><figcaption> <em>An anatomy lesson at the School of Nursing, circa 1960.<\/em>  <br><em>\u00a9 Archives du Monast\u00e8re des Augustines<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n<div class=\"item wysiwyg component-heading\" ><div class=\"container\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Doctor Aherner: A visionary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph\" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p>Dr. Michael Joseph Ahern founded the H\u00f4tel-Dieu de Qu\u00e9bec School of Nursing in January 1904. Dr. Ahern was well-known in the hospital as a skilled surgeon. He used to perform the most delicate operations! He was also one of the first doctors to implement principles of asepsis and antisepsis at the H\u00f4tel-Dieu de Qu\u00e9bec. Dr. Ahern was the only professor at the school until his death in 1914. His successor was Arthur Rousseau, who solicited the help of three other colleagues a few years later. In 1933, the School of Nursing became affiliated with Universit\u00e9 Laval. After that, some Augustinians took higher levels of education such as bachelor\u2019s degrees or certificates.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"item wysiwyg component-heading\" ><div class=\"container\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A variety of training<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph\" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p>What did nursing education look like at that time? The curriculum had three sections: religious, educational and professional. Nuns and laypeople composed the teaching corpse. The goal was for the nurses to acquire the know-how of their profession while maintaining good general culture. Special attention was given to teaching in the French language. There were history and French literature courses in the curriculum as well. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"item wysiwyg component-heading\" ><div class=\"container\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The times are a changing: Make way for secular professionals!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph\" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p>In 1950, the H\u00f4tel-Dieu de Qu\u00e9bec School of Nursing\nopened its doors to secular professionals. It was no longer necessary to be a\nnun in order to graduate. In the 1960s, the Parent Commission led to the\ncreation of CEGEPs, which soon offered nursing education. The H\u00f4tel-Dieu de\nQu\u00e9bec\u2019s School of Nursing finally closed its doors in 1972, after 68 years of\nexistence. It should be noted, however, that it trained 1,343 nurses, including\n290 Augustinians.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"item wysiwyg component-paragraph\" ><div class=\"container\">\n<p>Although the Augustinians of the H\u00f4tel-Dieu de Qu\u00e9bec no longer practice in the hospital, they still continue to support the sick, whether by prayer or by spending time with patients at the H\u00f4tel-Dieu de Quebec.
