In July 2019, Le Monast\u00e8re des Augustines launched its first Loto-r\u00e9pits <\/em>(Respite Lottery) to raise funds for its respite care program benefitting caregivers. Turning to a lottery as a funding activity may seem surprising, but it\u2019s a relatively old practice. The Augustinian Sisters have used it in the past, notably in 1871 to support the foundation of the H\u00f4tel-Dieu du Sacr\u00e9-Coeur in Qu\u00e9bec. A more recent example is linked to Maison Catherine de Longpr\u00e9, a private hospice co-founded by the Saint-Georges Augustinian Sisters. Here\u2019s a look at the history of the organization, and how lotteries pertain to its foundation and running. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Maison Catherine de\nLongpr\u00e9<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

In the early 1980s, Cyprienne Morissette wanted\nto offer a similar service to that of Qu\u00e9bec City\u2019s Maison Michel-Sarrazin, but\nfor the Beauce region. Its mission: provide palliative care to cancer patients.\nIt\u2019s important to note that palliative care is a relatively recent notion in\nthe West. In Qu\u00e9bec, it only appeared around the 1970s[1]<\/a>.\nMrs. Morissette\u2019s idea was aligned with a new school of thought at the time. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Mrs. Morisette was quickly contacted by\npharmacist Louise S\u00e9vigny, surgeon Denis Breton, as well as Sister Gertrude\nLortie\u2014the Saint-Georges Augustinian Sisters\u2019 superior at the time\u2014who all\nworked with cancer patients. Together, the group made the project a reality,\nand opened Maison Catherine de Longpr\u00e9 in homage to Catherine de\nSaint-Augustin<\/a> (1632-1668), an H\u00f4tel-Dieu de Qu\u00e9bec Augustinian\nSister born Catherine de Longpr\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Ensuring quality\nend-of-life care<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

In the beginning, the project\u2019s mission was to\nlaunch a network to care for end-of-life and cancer patients either at the\nfuture Maison Catherine de Longpr\u00e9 or at their home. The idea was to put\ntogether a multidisciplinary team consisting of healthcare professionals,\nvolunteers, social workers, pastoral workers, etc. The goal was to control\npain, fight loneliness, improve quality of life, and support patients and their\nfamilies through the end-of-life process. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

These days, the mission of the centre has\nexpanded without veering away from Mrs. Morisette and her partners\u2019 original intentions.\nAs can be read on the organization\u2019s website<\/a>\n(French only), \u201cOur mission: to provide end-of-life patients and their loved\nones with the best quality of life possible, as though they were in the warm\natmosphere of their own home\u201d. It\u2019s a wonderful example of Augustinian\nSister-worthy hospitality. What role did the Augustinian Sisters play in\nlaunching this type of project?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

The Saint-Georges\nAugustinian Sisters\u2019 contribution<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

The Saint-Georges, Beauce Augustinian community\nplayed a very important role in the centre\u2019s founding and running during the\nfirst years. The sisters worked as volunteers, playing a role in the management\nof the organization, and caring for patients. Part of the monastery was also\nrented out, and the community absorbed the operational costs of the project\nuntil 1995, when the Fondation Catherine de Longpr\u00e9 bought the buildings and\nland. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Considering the community was made up of only\neight nuns during the 1980s, the monastery was way too big for its actual\nneeds. A full floor was rented out to the Fondation for the symbolic price of\n$1. In a project document dated June 1986, the reorganization work was\nestimated at $250,000[2]<\/a>,\nwhich explains a huge need for funds. In fact, as a private organization, Maison\nCatherine de Longpr\u00e9 was likely unable to benefit from public financing,\npossibly excluding a seed grant. It was therefore necessary to find viable\nsources of revenue to support the Augustinian Sisters and Foundation. The\nfledgling organization turned to the generosity of the local population. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

The search for funds<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

When the project was still in its first stages,\nthe idea of a public offering was submitted. A radiothon was one example of the\nfinancing activities that were suggested. In 1988, a fundraising campaign\ncalled \u201cLa\nGrande corv\u00e9e<\/a>\u201d (\u201cthe great chore\u201d) was organized, with the goal of\nraising two million dollars[3]<\/a>.\nThanks to 1000 volunteer solicitors, a total of $2,108,044 were raised in six months\u2019\ntime. This amount was enough to open Maison Catherine de Longpr\u00e9 in November\n1989. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Despite the success of \u201cLa Grande corv\u00e9e\u201d, it\nbecame necessary to find recurring sources of funds. This is where the idea of\nan annual lottery came about. The first edition took place in 1991 and since,\nit has been the Maison\u2019s main financing activity. In a budget estimate document\ndated 1992 to 1995, we learn that the goal of the lottery was to raise $25,000\nper year. In comparison, the Augustinian Sisters planned to give $40,000\nyearly. This revenue was necessary; the healthcare-, medicine-, and\nadministration-related expenses were estimated at around $325,600 per year on average.\n<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

In the end, the financial goals had to be\nrevised and increased. In 1993, the lottery goal had almost doubled. Sister\nGertrude Lortie, president of the Maison, wrote in a bulletin that the goal was\n$55,000, indicating that \u201cThe aim of this lottery is to fill the lack in funds\ncaused by the current [economic] recession. In the long run, it will ensure\nnecessary funds for the administration of the Maison.\u201d Around 11,000 flyers\nwere distributed in the 50 parishes that were then part of the\nBeauce-Appalaches territory. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

It seems the local population never ceased\nresponding positively to the call for donations. For example, in 1995, the\nlottery raised $73,000. Twenty-three years later, in 2018, the lottery raised\n$389,036. The goal for 2019 is to raise $385,000, which represents 27% of the\norganization\u2019s operational budget. This demonstrates that lotteries are in fact\nan excellent way of financing community service projects.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
