Art lovers may be surprised to learn that there are works by famous painters in the Monast\u00e8re des Augustines\u2019 collection. One of these painters was Claude Fran\u00e7ois, better known as Fr\u00e8re Luc (1614-1685). Let’s see in detail one of his works that can be discovered as part of the thematic visit Fine Arts at Le Monast\u00e8re des Augustines<\/a>, and see why Fr\u00e8re Luc is an important figure in Quebec art history.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n

An Important Portrait for the Augustinian Sisters<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

One of the most important\npaintings in the Museum is undoubtedly this oil on canvas by Fr\u00e8re Luc, called Hospitaller\nSister Nursing Our Lord, Represented As a Patient[1]<\/a>.\nIt dates back to 1670. It was saved during the fire that destroyed the H\u00f4tel-Dieu\nde Qu\u00e9bec monastery in 1755. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

There is an Augustinian hospitaller looking over a patient whom she is\ndressing; this sick man is Christ. The scene depicts Jesus after descending\nfrom the cross after being crucified, with wounds on his hands and feet, and\nanother on his ribs. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

In the foreground, a plate, a glass of water, a sponge and a sandstone jar sit on a pedestal\ntable. Through the open window in\nthe background you can see a tree-covered mountain and a beach. This element of nature was probably\ninspired by the Saint-Charles River, since the R\u00e9collets monastery was located\nnearby, where the H\u00f4pital g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de Qu\u00e9bec is now.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

The scene illustrated in this work is not trivial for the Augustinian\nSisters. In fact, it evokes a\ncentral theological element; their mission\nwas based on the idea that they serve Jesus Christ through the sick people. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

A Recollect Painter Visiting Qu\u00e9bec<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
\n

Claude Fran\u00e7ois was trained to paint well before entering the Recollects\nOrder, where he took the religious name of Fr\u00e8re Luc. In 1632, likely already a skilled drawer and painter, he\nvisited the Paris studio of painter Simon Vouet, then he went to Rome to\nperfect his knowledge. He also\nacquired the title of “Painter of the King” for his decorative work\nin the Louvre (1640-1642). In 1644,\nClaude Fran\u00e7ois entered religion with the Recollects. Note that his religious name fit his “artistic\nvocation” very well, since Saint Luc is the patron of painters.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

From August 1670 to October 1671, Fr\u00e8re Luc made a stay in Qu\u00e9bec. This made him the first fine arts painter\nto work in New France. From then on,\nwe better understand his importance in the history of Quebec and Canadian art. During his brief 14-month stay, Fr\u00e8re Luc\nwas commissioned for several works by religious communities. Among these, the Augustinian and the\nUrsuline communities. Fr\u00e8re Luc also\ndecorated several churches in the colony.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

The painter\u2019s training and the variety of themes he painted are an\nasset to the quality of the commissioned works he produced. Art historians have attributed a very\nlarge number of works to him, but it is unlikely that he could have painted\nthem all during his stay in Quebec. It\nis plausible that he took some canvases with him from France. We also know that he was still commissioned\nafter his departure and painted them in his Paris studio.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
