The\nlanguage of the bells<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

The ringing of the bells was a regular\nfixture throughout the nuns’ days. The monastery\u2019s many bells had a language\nthat the novices quickly learned. By 4 a.m., the bell of the dormitory and that\nof the choir filled the air with the sound of a “Pater” and an\n“Ave” (Our Father<\/em> and Hail Mary<\/em>). Similarly, prayer, the conventual\nMass, the dinner of the poor, the rosary, gospel reading, the community supper\nand so on each had its distinctive ringtone. The day ended at sunset at 8:45 p.m.,\nwhile the community bell was rung for a “De Profundis” (Psalm 130).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Bell usage norms were also prescribed on\nsolemn holidays. During Holy Week, for example, the bells were said to have\n“gone to Rome,” from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday. This tradition,\nstill prevalent among Catholics, allowed the Augustinian Sisters to commemorate\nthe death of Jesus in contemplation and silence. Although the bells remained\nphysically in the monastery, they were not used during this period. The rattle then\nreplaced them for services as well as to announce the different moments of the\nday, including waking up.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Bells\nthat are now silent<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
\n

Several bells were reinstalled when\nrehabilitating the old buildings of the current Le Monast\u00e8re des Augustines;\neach of them having a specific function. The tour<\/em>\u2019s bell, for example, was used to inform the nun in attendance\nat the convent\u2019s tour<\/em> of the delivery\nof a parcel or the arrival of a visitor. The cloister bell was activated when\ndoctors or hospital staff entered the cloister. Ringing this bell made it\npossible to inform the nuns of the presence of these visitors. The nuns then\nhad to cover their faces with their veil. Finally, the two observance bells\nmade it possible to signal certain moments of the day, like waking up, the\nreligious services and the meals.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Although they were an integral part of the building, these bells are considered pieces of the collection of the monast\u00e8re de l\u2019H\u00f4tel-Dieu de Qu\u00e9bec. This explains why they are no longer rung. In spite of not hearing them, they are now attracting the eye of visitors walking through the corridors of the Monastery. Le Monast\u00e8re.
